What is SNEPS?
The Suriname National Electronic Payment System (SNEPS) is the national electronic payment infrastructure operated by the Central Bank of Suriname and has been in operation since 2015. . SNEPS facilitates the secure and efficient processing of payments and receipts between the government, banks, and other financial institutions in Suriname.
Through SNEPS, salaries, subsidies, taxes, and interbank transfers are processed. In addition, SNEPS enables account holders to transfer funds between different banks in Suriname through internet banking and mobile banking applications.
Origin and Background
SNEPS was implemented in 2015 as part of the modernization of Suriname’s payment infrastructure. Before the introduction of SNEPS, interbank payments were often processed manually, which could result in funds taking several days to become available to the beneficiary. The introduction of SNEPS marked an important step toward a safer, more efficient, and more reliable payment system.
A Phased Development
When SNEPS was launched in 2015, it supported interbank transfers in Surinamese Dollars (SRD). In the years that followed, the platform was further expanded:

Alongside these expansions, processing times were gradually improved. While interbank transfers could take several business days during the early years, this was reduced to an average of one business day by 2025.
This continuous improvement reflects the phased approach adopted by the Central Bank of Suriname and the banking sector in developing the national payment infrastructure.
At present, smaller value payments are processed at scheduled intervals during the day. Large-value payments are processed individually during business hours
(07:45 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.). Payments submitted outside these hours are queued and processed during the next available processing window.
The Next Phase: SNEPS Fast Payments
The introduction of SNEPS Fast Payments marks a significant enhancement of Suriname’s payment infrastructure by enabling faster processing of interbank electronic transfers.
The continued modernization of SNEPS aligns with the increasing digitalization of Surinamese society and the growing demand for faster digital financial services. The ambition of the Central Bank of Suriname, the Surinamese Bankers Association, and the commercial banks is to achieve increasingly faster processing of electronic fund transfers, with the first milestone being processing within a maximum of one hour during business hours and the ultimate goal being processing within 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The first phase of SNEPS Fast Payments will be launched in June 2026 and includes, among other developments:
- The introduction of the new SNEPS Fast Payments module, enabling payments between customers of different banks to be processed within one hour. This bulk-payment processing covers more than 90% of all transactions within SNEPS and operates on a more continuous basis rather than at fixed processing times;
- Technical enhancements aimed at greater scalability, improved security, and further alignment with international messaging standards.
This development represents an important milestone in the ongoing evolution of the national payment infrastructure. Like previous expansions, SNEPS Fast Payments will also be implemented in phases. The shared ambition of the Central Bank of Suriname, the Surinamese Bankers Association, and the commercial banks is to enable transfers to and from all banks within 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by the end of 2026.
SNEPS Fast Payments forms part of the ongoing modernization of Suriname’s national payment infrastructure. Through close cooperation between the Central Bank of Suriname, the Surinamese Bankers Association, and the commercial banks, electronic payments will continue to become faster, more efficient, and more accessible for citizens and businesses throughout the country.
