The Central Bank of Suriname kicked off celebrations of the 2013 International Year of Statistics on November 8, 2013 with a get-together between the Governor of the Bank and the staff of the Statistics Department. In his speech the Governor referred to the Statistics Department as “the heart of economic and financial information”.
The Statistics Department has during the past years developed macro-economic and financial monetary statistics of Suriname of very high quality. The data is published in Suriname as well as internationally. This provides sound insight in the economic development of Suriname and the Governor noted that in this regard the Bank emphasizes to safeguard the objectivity of the statistical data.

Celebrating the International Year of Statistics continues with an exposition about statistics and the contribution of the Statistics Department. Activities of the department encompass the gathering and processing of data, as well as knowledge transfer and education provision in the area of financial economic statistics.
“Statistics as the art of telling a story with figures” is an important didactic principle being practiced by the department in this regard.
